Cesarean Birth

Caesarean section is the operation of birth through the abdomen, that is, through the abdomen, rather than through the vaginal route.

Caesarean section birth, the most common surgical procedure in the world, is performed in risky situations for the mother or the baby. Cesarean section birth, which is performed through surgery from the abdominal area, is performed in the operating room environment and under anesthesia. Caesarean section, whose most important advantage is that the birth time can be planned, is especially beneficial in cases where birth must be carried out very quickly.

What are the differences between normal birth and cesarean birth?

Normal birth is the opening of the cervix after the onset of labor, followed by the baby descending down the birth canal with uterine contractions, and eventually exiting through the vaginal route.

In cesarean delivery, the baby is delivered by surgically cutting the abdomen and uterus, regardless of whether labor begins.

What are the advantages of cesarean birth?

The most important advantage of cesarean birth is that the time of birth can be planned. This is a great benefit in cases where birth must be carried out very quickly. Avoiding birth trauma in situations where birth trauma may be risky for the baby is another advantage.

How is cesarean birth performed?

Towards the end of the pregnancy, the type of birth is decided as a result of doctor's examination and checks. Cesarean birth can be performed as a planned or emergency.

The stages of cesarean birth are as follows:

  • Anesthesia is applied before starting the procedure. Caesarean section is performed in hospital operating rooms under general or local anesthesia. As local anesthesia, one of the spinal or epidural anesthesia techniques is applied. During this anesthesia, the mother is conscious but does not feel pain. During spinal anesthesia, the anesthetic solution is sent into the spinal cord from the waist area through a needle. In epidural anesthesia, the anesthetic solution is applied outside the spinal cord. Thus, the body from the waist down is anesthetized. The mother does not feel any pain or suffering.
  • A vascular access is established to the mother and the necessary medications for the surgery are given.
  • The mother's abdomen is cleaned with antiseptic solution. A catheter is inserted into the mother and urine is drained.
  • After the numbing process is completed, a horizontal incision is made in the abdominal area at the level of the uterus. The uterus is reached and then, after making a similar incision in the uterus, the baby is removed from the uterus. The umbilical cord is cut. The newborn baby's breathing and breathing are ensured.
  • The baby is handed over to medical personnel for necessary procedures.
  • The surgery is completed by first stitching the uterus and then the abdominal skin tissue.
  • After cesarean delivery, the mother and baby can stay in the hospital for a few days if necessary.

How long does a cesarean birth take?

The time between cesarean birth and the start and completion of the surgery after anesthesia is administered is approximately 30-45 minutes.
